School Safety Checklist Guide

A school safety checklist is a document that lists down all the ideal occupational safety and health regulations that must be in place for a school to be safe. Even parents can make use  of their own back-to-school safety checklists. It is a great tool that the management of any school can use to gauge just how safe the school is for students, staff and visitors. School administrators can also adopt a school safety checklist and use it as a guide for boosting security and safety at the church. Here are some of the things that must be considered when drawing up a school safety checklist:

• School Fencing and the School Safety Checklist

This has to include the type of fencing, how high it has to be, where to put entrances for visitors along the fence, and clear demarcation of restricted areas. When looking at the plants within the fence, the school safety checklist must spell out requirements for the trimming of shrubs and foliage within the fence to allow for proper monitoring. There must be no poisonous shrubs, trees or foliage within the fence or even throughout the school compound.

The school safety checklist must include marking out the designated bus drop off and pick up points and the reasons for the selection of the sites.

Is there sufficient lighting in and around the building to improve security for all? Is there a clearly marked out, area for parents to pick and drop their children from? Are all entrances properly lit? Are there measures for eliminating trash and graffiti? The compound should be designed in such a way that a security patrol vehicle can reach all areas. All students and staff who use parking should be given stickers at the gate. Further, students should not be allowed to access the parking area when it is not either arrival or dismissal times.

• The School Safety Checklist and Play Areas

Play areas, just like other areas in the school must be catered for in the school safety checklist. Look into the supervision of play and the play equipment. Provide for trained supervisors for each activity for instance life guards in the pool. Fellow students may even be trained to serve as additional lifeguards. The school safety checklist should provide for proper security of play ground equipment. That they meet a certain standard of quality and that they cannot be unfastened by students or anyone.

• Video Surveillance in the School Safety Checklist

All bicycle racks and parking lots have to be monitored by video surveillance at all times. The camera lenses must at all times be protected against vandalism. This needs to be provided for in the school safety checklist.

• Providing for High Risk Areas

The school security checklist must provide for higher-level security for high risk areas. These areas usually include the offices, computer labs, cafeteria, science labs, nurses office, the telephone lines closet, science labs, boiler room, and any electrical rooms. Install security cameras, alarm systems and high security locks for these areas.
